âWhy were you talking about me?â Hannah asked as she stood, leaning against a wooden fence overlooking a cliff in Santa Monicaâs Palisades Park. âHave I done something wrong without knowing it?â
âNo,â Jesse replied. âI was just telling Ryan that you were texting me updates, but I wanted to actually hear your voice.â
âThatâs very sweet,â Hannah said. âWell, to answer your question, Iâm with the Wildpines crew, of course. Weâre just admiring a cliffside view of the pier and the ocean while we wait for our dinner table to be ready. Patrice got reservations at a seafood place across the street that supposedly has amazing lobster rolls, so Iâm pretty excited.â
As she spoke, she and the others stood side by side along the wooden fence overlooking the cliff, with her at one end. Chris, at the other end, was playing peek-a-boo with her, poking his head out from behind Carlos and then darting behind him again.
âYou sound excited, maybe even a little giddy,â Jessie said. âAre you sure itâs about the lobster rolls?â
âWhat do you mean?â Hannah asked, feeling her face flush in the darkness.
âI guess Iâm just wondering if thereâs one particular lobster roll that youâre more excited about than the others?â
Hannah wanted to plead ignorance to Jessieâs real reference but knew it was a waste of time.
âHow did you know?â she asked in a hushed voice.
âI can profile voices too, little sister,â Jessie told her.
Even though Annie, who was standing next to her, was deep in conversation with Doug, Hannah turned and leaned away from her.
âChris and I are really hitting it off,â she whispered into the phone. âI wasnât sure if the connection I felt up in the mountains would still be there, but we picked up right where we left off.â
âThatâs awesome, have fun with it,â Jessie said, sounding genuinely excited for her. Then there was a brief pause in which Hannah knew the caveat was coming. âBut not too much fun.â
âJessie, Iâm eighteen,â Hannah started to protest.
âNo, thatâs not what I mean,â her sister said quickly. âI trust you to make the best decisions for yourself when it comes to what you do with Chris. I just mean, donât let the fun get in the way of staying alert. I hate to be a bummer, but with everything thatâs happened to us lately, I feel like I have to give you the obligatory reminder: be vigilant. Keep your eyes open. If something feels off, trust your instincts. And donât hesitate to call me if things go south. Deal?â
âDeal,â Hannah said.
âIâm really sorry I had to go there,â Jessie told her.
âItâs okay,â Hannah assured her. âI would have almost been disappointed if you hadnât. Almost.â
âGlad I could live up to expectations,â Jessie said. âNow Iâm going to stop being such a downer and let you go. Have fun and give Chris a kiss for me.â
âGoodbye,â Hannah said firmly.
âGoodbye, little sis,â Jessie said.
Hannah could hear her chuckling as she hung up. When she turned back around the
